Changes to August welcome week announced

As Commencement ceremonies end, planning begins to welcome new students to campus for the fall semester. This August, the traditional Convocation ceremony will take on a new format and location.

The announcement was made April 28 by the Academic Affairs and Student Affairs divisions.

While there will no longer be a formal Convocation procession, faculty and staff will have new and meaningful opportunities to connect with the newest Lakers.

Laker Kickoff will be a new welcome event for first-year students. The kickoff, planned for the evening of August 22 at Lubbers Stadium, will feature remarks from President Philomena V. Mantella, the class photo on the field and interactive activities designed to help students build connections.

Jenny Hall-Jones, vice president for Student Affairs, said: “By working collaboratively with our partners in Academic Affairs, we are creating meaningful opportunities for faculty, staff and students to engage in a vibrant and welcoming environment during the entire opening weekend. We look forward to seeing our newest Lakers at our new Laker Kickoff event and throughout the academic year as we continue to build a strong, supportive community together.”

College Welcome Sessions are being planned for August 24 to formally welcome students into the academic community. More details will be shared soon on the Laker Welcome website .
