Laker Family Appreciation Weekend Begins October 8

Laker Family Appreciation Weekend, October 8-10, offers many in-person events for students and their supporters

The Campus Activities Board will host many free Family Weekend events such as movie showings of Godzilla vs. Kong and anchor decorating. Dueling Pianos will visit campus to perform for families in the Grand River Room in Kirkhof Center on Friday, October 8, at 7:30 p.m.

The annual Family Weekend 5K will return in-person this year with virtual attendance still being an option. The in-person event will take place on the Allendale Campus at 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 9, beginning and ending at the Cook Carillon Tower. For those who register before October 1, the cost will be $25. For those who register at the event, the cost will be $30. 

The weekend will also be full of opportunities to watch GVSU Laker Club Sports teams compete, such as men’s D1 and D3 club hockey, women’s ice hockey club and women’s and men’s soccer clubs.  

A Laker Family Appreciation Weekend Tailgate will be held prior to the football game where families can meet other Laker supporters. 

The Laker Family Day football game against Northwood University will kick off at 7 p.m. Tickets are free for GVSU students, who can use their student IDs as their ticket. Tickets for family members and friends can be purchased on the GVSU Lakers website.

To end the weekend, The Outdoor Adventures program will host a Fall Color Bike Tour at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Attendees can enjoy donuts and a casual ride from the Pew Campus through Grand Rapids’ Millenium Park. The ride will start/finish at the DeVos Center plaza near the Beckering family Carillon Tower on the Pew Campus. There will be two route options: A nine-mile ride and a longer loop of 13-15 miles, both including a planned rest stop near the middle of the ride.
