GVSU events to celebrate Hispanic heritage

The Office of Multicultural Affairs is hosting a series of events for its annual Hispanic Heritage celebration, including lectures, celebrations and more. 

In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the events will introduce Grand Valley community members to various elements of the Latinx culture.

La Peña: September 26, 6-8 p.m., Eberhard Center 

La Peña will serve as a space to showcase the diversity of local Latino talent in the community. 

Family Separation & Border Camps: October 2, 1-2:30 p.m., 2250 Kirkhof Center 

Camila Trefftz, a Department of Justice accredited representative for the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center and program coordinator for MIRC's Unaccompanied Minors program, will discuss family separation and border camps along the U.S./Mexico border. 

Peggy Robles-Alvarado: October 10, 1:30-2:30 p.m., 2204 Kirkhof Center

Peggy Robles-Alvarado is a New York City educator with graduate degrees in elementary and bilingual education, and an MFA in performance and performance studies from Pratt Institute. Robles-Alvarado uses her rhythmic energy to celebrate womanhood and honor cultural rituals. 

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead): October 31, 6-8 p.m., Niemeyer Honors Building lobby

Dia de los Muertos, a Mexican heritage holiday, is a gathering of loved ones to pray for and remember those who have died and to support their spiritual journeys.

Latino Student Union Dinner/Dance: November 8, 8 p.m.-midnight, 2250 Grand River Room, Kirkhof Center 

The annual event hosted by the Latino Student Union includes entertainment, dinner, dancing and prizes.
