Grand Valley is one of only seven institutions across the country selected to join a national initiative dedicated to promoting civic learning and democratic engagement.

The 2018-2019 National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Lead Initiative has named Grand Valley a Lead Consulting Institution, which calls for the university to act as a mentor and assist other institutions with civic learning programming and strategy. Selection for the designation was based on current civic engagement work.

Grand Valley's NASPA Lead Initiative civic learning efforts are led by Marlene Kowalski-Braun, associate vice president for Inclusion and Student Support, and Melissa Baker-Boosamra, associate director of Student Life, Civic Engagement and Assessment.

"Being asked to share our own learning is an honor, as it showcases what we have done and how we continue to work together. It also situates us in a space to learn from others," said Kowalski-Braun.

NASPA is a network of 1,200 colleges and universities across the country. As a member, Grand Valley provides opportunities for students to participate in their communities and encourages appreciation of diversity and social responsibility.

Loren Rullman, vice provost for Student Affairs and dean of students, said this designation will allow the university to continue to help students learn how to be active citizens, both during their time at Grand Valley and as alumni.

"As a public university, civic learning and engagement are simultaneously how we contribute to what students learn about themselves and the world, and how we serve others in West Michigan and beyond," Rullman said.

Grand Valley's commitment to civic learning can be seen in its many initiatives, including the Civic Action Plan. The Community Service Learning Center hosts several events throughout the year, including Make a Difference Day, the Democracy 101 Series, MLK Day of Service and Solidarity and National Voter Registration Week, which takes place September 22-28.

Travus Burton, director for Civic and Community Engagement, and Liz Collver, assistant director for Student Life, Civic Engagement, are also involved in Grand Valley's efforts. Learn more at gvsu.edu/civicengagement and gvsu.edu/service
