Gov. Rick Snyder announced the appointment of Sue Jandernoa and Elizabeth (Beth) Emmitt to the Grand Valley State University Board of Trustees. The eight-year terms begin January 1, 2019.

Jandernoa, of West Olive, is a graduate of Central Michigan University and a former elementary school teacher in East Grand Rapids. She now dedicates much of her time to community service. She is currently serving on the boards of Make-a-Wish Michigan, Helen DeVos Children's Hospital Foundation, Broadway Grand Rapids and ArtPrize Grand Rapids.

"Grand Valley is an important part of the fabric of West Michigan," said Jandernoa. "I am pleased to be associated with an institution of higher learning that plays an integral role in the vitality of our region. My background as an educator indicates my keen interest in the role teaching and learning have in our communities. I am looking forward to working with my board colleagues and the administration in supporting the mission of Grand Valley."

Emmitt, of Byron Center, is the deputy chief of staff for Gov. Snyder and has served in his administration since 2011. She has previous experience as director of constituent relations in the Secretary of State office. She is a Hope College graduate with a degree in political science and communications and was a 2010 fellow with the Michigan Political Leadership Program.

"I am honored for the opportunity to work with the outstanding leaders at the university," said Emmitt. "Grand Valley has a strong administration as well as accomplished trustees. My husband and father graduated from Grand Valley, so I am well aware of the positive and respected culture. Grand Valley is focused on student success and is truly an innovative university. It is exciting to be part of its future and I'm ready to get to work."

Jandernoa and Emmitt will replace David Hooker and John Kennedy, whose terms expire at the end of the year.

The appointments are subject to state Senate approval.
