The Grand Valley Bass Anglers Club took first place at the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Eastern Tour in Tennessee in May, winning a bid to the national championship in July.

Lucas Murphy, Bass Anglers Club president, and Nolan Hitt competed against 262 schools at the three-day tournament in Jefferson City. Teams compete to catch the five largest fish over a fixed period of time; in total, the duo finished with 42 pounds, 10 ounces.

"It was a very surreal experience to win the event, and sharing this title with others on the team makes it that much better," said Murphy, a senior majoring in marketing and accounting. "The bass fishing community is like one big family and being able to make friends from other schools is one of the reasons these events are so exciting."

Murphy and Hitt, who graduated in April, will compete at the 2018 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship in July in Oklahoma.

Even though the club sport was established about six years ago, the team has spent time at the top of the national club rankings. For more information about the GVSU Bass Anglers Club, visit www.gvsuclubsports.com/sport/0/56.php
