A recent study conducted by Information Technology (IT) and the Grand Valley Police Department on cell phone coverage near classrooms resulted in the installation of 19 additional public phones on the Allendale and Pew Grand Rapids campuses.

IT identified areas near classrooms where there was poor reception or no signal. Additional phones were installed in several buildings including the Fieldhouse, AuSable Hall, Henry Hall, Padnos Hall of Science, Kindschi Hall of Science, Lake Superior Hall, Mackinac Hall and Cook-DeVos Center for Health Sciences.

“Students tested multiple cell carriers on campus to determine the signal strength as well as placing a call and receiving a call," said Sue Korzinek, director of Information Technology. "All locations were tested for the ability to place a call, receive a call and hold a call. All locations that tested negative in any one of those three tests were given a ‘low signal’ mark and those that did not pass any of the three tests were given a ‘no signal’ mark.”

Grand Valley provides public phones in many locations around campus which can be used for local calls and dialing 911. The phones that are located at the entrances to buildings can dial Grand Valley dispatch with the red button as well as local calls and 911.
