A group of Grand Valley State University students organized a daylong memorial to remember victims of 9/11.

About 50 students put 2,977 mini American flags — one for each person who died in the attacks 14 years ago — in the ground on the Allendale and Pew Grand Rapids campuses.

"I hope that when students, faculty and staff members see the flags on campus they are able to take a moment in their own way to remember 9/11," said Maddie Cleghorn, president of Student Senate.

The memorial was organized by Grand Valley’s Student Senate, and Young Americans for Freedom and College Republicans student organizations.

The carillon towers on both campuses will play patriotic music throughout the day.
