Love Your Body Week begins Monday

A Women and Gender Studies class and the Women’s Center have teamed up to host a week of events from February 16-20 to celebrate Love Your Body Week. 

The week is in conjunction with National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, which is February 22-28. 

Jo Ann Wassenaar, associate director of the Women’s Center, said the week will focus on positive body image and the role social media and pop culture play in individuals being dissatisfied with their bodies.

Healing Body Image and Mindful Eating: Monday, February 16, 6 p.m., Kirkhof Center, room 2270. Laura Burkett, a holistic health and eating psychology counselor, will lead a discussion about what it takes to embrace one’s body. 

Eating Disorder Screenings: Wednesday, February 18

Allendale: 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Kirkhof Center and 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Recreation Center

Grand Rapids: 10 a.m.-2 p.m., DeVos Center (building C study area) and Cook-DeVos Health Sciences building lobby

Zumba Party: Wednesday, February 18, 8-10 p.m., Fieldhouse

• Body Image: Thursday, February 19, 6 p.m., Kirkhof Center, room 2259. The program will explore the impact of advertising and media messaging on women’s body images. 

Love Your Body - Express Yourself: Friday, February 20, 7 p.m., Kirkhof Center, Thornapple Room. Students, faculty and staff members will share stories, songs and poems on body image. Refreshments will be provided.
