Virginia Jenkins, chair of the Art and Design Department, said this exhibition is unique in that professionals and educators outside the Grand Valley community select the participants and the award winners. While some monetary awards will be given, most of the “awards” for students are permanent places for their works in Grand Valley’s Art Collection, which currently consists of approximately 13,000 pieces of art. Student works will also be available for purchase by the general public.

“[The goal] is to provide an opportunity for majors, minors and other students taking courses in our programs to have the opportunity to have their work evaluated by professionals in the field other than the professional faculty,” Jenkins said.

Visitors of this exhibition will experience more than traditional artwork, as submissions come from various artistic arenas, including printmaking, photography, painting, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry and metalsmithing, graphic design, illustration, film and video, drawing, mixed media and electronic works.

Anthony Thompson, director of the School of Communications, said this exhibition is an opportunity to celebrate excellent student work in the visual arts.

“As an annual event, this is an important opportunity for our community, especially our leaders and friends, to see the great work our students and faculty are doing in the arts. It also encourages students and builds our community,” Thompson said.

The Juried Student Exhibition is open to the public during normal gallery hours. For more information, contact the Art and Design Department at (616) 331-3486.
