President Thomas J. Haas gave the convocation and commencement address at the Van Andel Institute Graduate School ceremony August 17 in Grand Rapids.

Haas serves on the Board of Directors for VAIGS.

The occasion marked the 10th anniversary of the formal founding of VAI's unique master's and doctoral programs. Haas told the audience he, too, celebrates a 10th anniversary year this academic year.

Two of the four incoming students at VAIGS received bachelor's degrees from Grand Valley in cell and molecular biology: Robert Vaughan and Leslie Wyman.

Haas spoke about the vibrant partnership between Grand Valley and VAI.

"Grand Valley State students are working in VAI labs, and they are already making contributions," he said. "A successful partnership with our biomedical engineering master’s program resulted in students presenting with VAI at the World Molecular Imaging Congress on methods to improve the early detection of cancer and other diseases."
