The Laker Marching Band, GVSU Dance Company and WGVU kicked off ArtPrize 2015 on September 23 in Rosa Parks Circle in downtown Grand Rapids.

Joined by President Thomas J. Haas and Louie the Laker, the newly christened Community Arts Celebration began with opening remarks by ArtPrize officials and a proclamation by Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell.

Following the proclamation, the Laker Marching Band, under the direction of President Haas, and Louie energized the crowd before being joined by the GVSU Dance Company.

Following their Rosa Parks Circle performances, the band proceeded in cadence through downtown and across the Blue Pedestrian Bridge to the L.V. Eberhard Center on Grand Valley’s Pew Grand Rapids Campus where the group performed a second time.

WGVU also hosted a Bob Ross look-alike contest to honor the late artist whose program, “The Joy of Painting,” aired on PBS from 1983-1994.

The Community Arts Celebration is a partnership among Grand Valley, ArtPrize, the Grand Rapids Art Museum, Gilda’s Club of Grand Rapids, LaughFest, PBS Arts, PBS Digital Studios, PBS Arts Fall Festival, GrandCon and Grand Rapids Comic-Con.

ArtPrize runs through October 11. For more information about Grand Valley students, faculty and alumni competing in ArtPrize.
