Sketches

Monica Johnstone, director of communications and advancement for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was named a semifinalist for the 2015 American Quilter's Society QuiltWeek. The event will take place at the DeVos Place Convention Center in Grand Rapids August 12-15. Johnstone will display her quilt, "Pace and Spin." 

Ross Sherman, associate professor of movement science, gave two presentations, “Hand and Forearm, But Not Neck Cooling, Reduces Thermophysiological and Perceptual Strain Following Passive Hyperthermia” and “Cognitive and Motor Skill Performance Are Improved By Active Cooling Following Passive Hyperthermia,” at the 62nd Annual Meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine in San Diego, California.

George McBane, professor and chair of chemistry, was named one of the Journal of Chemical Physics top 20 reviewers for 2014. 

Robert Deaner, associate professor of psychology, co-authored an article, "Does the Sex Difference in Competitiveness Decrease in Selective Sub-Populations? A Test with Intercollegiate Distance Runners," published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Melodee Vanden Bosch, assistant professor of nursing, received a grant from the Kappa Epsilon at Large Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International for a project, "Focus Group: Middle-aged Women with Type 2 Diabetes and Physical Activity."

Davia Downey, assistant professor of public, nonprofit and health administration, was an expert panelist to select quarterfinalists for the America's Best Communities competition, a $10 million initiative to stimulate economic revitalization in small towns and cities.

Osman Patel, associate professor of cell and molecular biology, co-authored an article, "Transcriptomes Reveal Alterations in Gravity Impact Circadian Clocks and Activate Mechanotransduction Pathways with Adaptation through Epigenetic Change," published in Physiological Genomics.

Michael M. Scantlebury, associate professor of hospitality and tourism management, gave a presentation, “Transformative Learning and Teaching Hospitality and Tourism Research," at the annual Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Academy Conference at the University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio.
