Sketches
Salim Haidar, professor of mathematics, earned a grant from the National Science Foundation for the project, "Conference on Multiscale Modeling with Partial Differential Equations in Computational Science and Engineering."
Zulema Moret, professor and coordinator of Spanish, earned a grant from Pragda for a project, "Grand Rapids Latin American Film Festival."
John Koches, associate research scientist at the Annis Water Resources Institute, and Paul Isely, chair of the economics, received a $41,650 grant from the West Michigan Environmental Action Council for a project, "Stormwater Green Infrastructure Ecosystem Services Calculator."
Liberal Studies faculty members Randa Elbih and Kimberly McKee and Debjani Chakravarty, assistant professor of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies, gave a presentation, "Beyond Black and White: Teaching Fifty Shades of Grey in Race, Racialization, and Race Relations," at the 2015 Teach-In. Elbih also gave presentations at the American Educational Research Association conference in Chicago, Illinois, and wrote an article, "Teaching about Islam and Muslims while Countering Cultural Misrepresentations," published in the Social Studies Journal.
Meri Goehring, associate professor of physical therapy, fulfilled all requirements of the American Board of Wound Management and is now a Certified Wound Specialist, one of only six in Michigan.
Davia Downey, assistant professor of public, nonprofit and health administration, gave a presentation, "How Do Voluntary Neighborhood Associations Vary? A Study of Programmatic Activities and Economic Vitality in Grand Rapids, Michigan," at the Urban Affairs Association Annual Meeting in Miami, Florida
Rick Albrecht, professor of movement science, gave a webinar, "Playing it Safe: Making Sure Our Kids Have Proper Facilities and Appropriate Equipment," for the Navy Installations Command of the U.S. Navy.
Jason Crouthamel, associate professor of history, was invited to give a presentation, "Hysterical Men? Traumatized Veterans of the First World War and their Battle for Recognition in the Third Reich," as part of a lecture series sponsored by the Baden Wuerttemberg Regional Library in Stuttgart, Germany.
