Rowing dedicates new boat for student who died

The Rowing Club at Grand Valley dedicated their newest boat for Rachel Ring, a student who died in an automobile accident in October 2011. A ceremony was held April 12 at the Spring Lake Yacht Club.

Ring joined the Grand Valley women’s novice rowing team during her first semester at Grand Valley in the fall of 2011. Her family donated funds for the boat that is named the “Rachel Ring, 1991-2011.”

Ring’s family unveiled the boat, and team members, coaches, and Grand Valley administrators, including Grand Valley President Thomas J. Haas, made remarks during the ceremony.

“The decision for Rachel’s family to donate the new boat will not only benefit the entire rowing program, but will also carry on Rachel’s memory for years to come,” said John Bancheri, head rowing coach.

The ceremony took place one day before athletes throughout the Midwest will compete at the annual Lubbers Cup Regatta at the Spring Lake Yacht Club on April 13. The “Rachel Ring” will compete in its inaugural race at the regatta. More information about the event is at www.lubberscup.com.
