Relay for Life raises thousands for cancer research
More than 2,300 students, faculty and staff members gathered in the
Fieldhouse April 12-13 for the 11th annual Relay For Life event at
Grand Valley.
Sponsored by the student organization Colleges Against Cancer,
the 12-hour event raised more than $83,000 by nearly 100 teams. The
funds will be donated to the American Cancer Society for cancer
research and to support programs.
Courtney Miller, an allied health sciences major and president
of Colleges Against Cancer, said Relay for Life isn’t just an event,
but an experience. “We wanted to make sure participants walked away
knowing what ACS can do for them,” she said. “It was also important to
provide an opportunity for student organizations to work hand-in-hand
with us toward a common goal.”
Miller, from Bay City, led a team of more than 70 students who
planned and organized the event. The group met every Wednesday night
since fall to prepare for the event, and formed committees to help
with different functions at the event.
