Next MLK event Thursday includes community award

Officials at Grand Valley will present the first Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award to the Steepletown Neighborhood Services during an event on Thursday, January 24, at the Kirkhof Center.
Steepletown Neighborhood Services, 671 Davis Ave. NW, offers
programs and services to new immigrants. Within a nominating letter,
the organization was cited for breaking down economic barriers by
teaching money management, offering career exploration opportunities
and a GED prep program. Criteria for the award include making a
positive impact on the lives of West Michigan residents.
GVSU leaders will present the award to Steepletown staff members
Emilio Zamarripa and Melanie Straub prior to a presentation from the
university’s keynote MLK speaker Majora Carter.
The event will begin at 5 p.m. in the Grand River Room.
Carter continues a weeklong commemoration week with her
presentation, “Poverty in Today’s World: The Food Justice Movement.”
Carter is an urban revitalizationist and the host of “The Promised
Land,” which airs on National Public Radio.
Her presentation will be webcast to audiences in the Eberhard
Center and the Meijer Holland Campus. The event is free and open to
the public.
