Lakers for a Cure telethon exceeds goal
The first annual “Lakers for a Cure” telethon, hosted by the three
Grand Valley student media groups on March 28, raised $2,427 in a
24-hour period. Their goal was to raise $2,400 for the 2013 GVSU Relay
For Life in support of the American Cancer Society.
The telethon was a partnership between GVTV, the Lanthorn and
radio station WCKS The Whale. It was the first time that all three
groups have worked together on a project.
The event kicked off Wednesday, March 27, at 10 p.m. with a
luminary ceremony at the Cook Carillon Tower on the Allendale Campus,
and accepting donations in a special PayPal account. Throughout the
next day donations were also accepted at a table in the Kirkhof
Center. Whale Radio began a live remote broadcast from the Kirkhof
donation table at 6 p.m., followed at 8 p.m. by the telethon broadcast
live from both the GVTV studio and Area 51 in lower Kirkhof.
The two-hour show included a variety of entertainment acts and
interviews with cancer survivors and caregivers. The broadcast ended
with an announcement of the results and a presentation of the proceeds
to Courtney Miller, Grand Valley’s president of Colleges Against
Cancer, toward the upcoming Relay For Life event at Grand Valley on
April 12th.
