The first annual “Lakers for a Cure” telethon will air on Grand
Valley Television Thursday, March 28, from 8-10 p.m.
The telethon is a partnership between the three student-run
media groups: GVTV, the Lanthorn and radio station WCKS The Whale. The
group’s goal is to raise $2,400 for the 2013 GVSU Relay For Life in
support of the American Cancer Society, during the 24 hours following
the end of the televised program.
The two-hour show will consist of entertainment acts by Grand
Valley students, including music, comedy, and more. The show will also
showcase guest speakers who have been affected by cancer and a
representative from Colleges Against Cancer.
A PayPal link will available the day of the telethon for online
donations, at www.grandvalleytv.com/telethon. Tables will be set up in
Kirkhof Center throughout the day to accept cash and check donations.
“The idea of doing a telethon actually came up about a year ago
when our station first got the capabilities to go live,” said GVTV
Station Manager Jamie Bartkowicz, a film and video production major.
“The Whale will be broadcasting throughout the day of the telethon and
the Lanthorn will be doing a feature story. Both organizations will be
collecting donations as well.”
Len O’Kelly, School of Communications visiting professor and
faculty adviser for GVTV and WCKS, said the telethon represents great
effort on the part of all three student-run media groups.
Students who live on campus can access GVTV on Channel 10. The
telethon will stream live at www.grandvalleytv.com/live
for those who do not live on campus. The public is encouraged join the
audience in Area 51 in the lower of Kirkhof Center.
