Grand Valley Television was among the winners of the 2013 High School and College Broadcast Awards presented by The Michigan Association of Broadcasters.

GVTV won first place for content produced in the News Feature/Magazine Program and Talk Show categories. The station also received honorable mentions for News Feature/Magazine Program and Sports Play-by-Play. This is the first time that the student-run station has submitted entries for this competition.

Christina Choriatis produced “Inspire,” the talk show that won first place. The show features uplifting interviews with people who have overcome difficulties. “It’s great that we can reach out and encourage people to reach their potential,” said Choriatis. “It feels good to produce something that benefits the community and not just something for an audience.”

Grand Valley won the second highest number of awards this year, something that Len O’Kelly, GVTV adviser and visiting professor, said is a great honor in college broadcasting. “This recognition is especially great for the students,” O’Kelly said. “The competition was judged by professional broadcasters. People in the industry are looking at what comes out of Grand Valley and are taking note on the quality of programming the students are producing.”

An award ceremony to honor the winners will be held March 13 in Lansing.
