Business students win 'The Project' competition

Students from Grand Valley's Seidman College of Business took first
place, winning $5,000 in the 2013 Collegiate Project Management
Competition April 16 at Davenport University.
Seven teams
from universities throughout Michigan participated in the competition,
including Michigan Technological University, Davenport University,
Grand Valley State, and Kalamazoo College.
Grand Valley’s team was led by Jaideep Motwani, professor of
management, and included undergraduate students Khanh Dang, David
Musselman, and Amanda Russo, and Full-time Integrated MBA students
Ryan Maloney, Kathleen McKee and Tim Sporte. This is the second year
in a row Grand Valley students placed first.
Teams from Michigan Technological University took second and
third place; a team from Kalamazoo College took fourth place.
Students developed plans for a company looking to initiate a
project focused on employee retention and attracting new employees,
with a $90,000 budget and implementation deadline of January 2014. The
competition included delivering a project scope statement and charter,
completing a time line, implementing a roles and responsibility
matrix, developing a communication management plan, and creating a
full project book.
Grand Valley’s team, “SMART” (Successfully changing our Market
demand, and Attracting and Retaining skilled employees to utilize our
investment in Technology), addressed the talent retention issue faced
in Michigan. The plan aligns with Gov. Snyder’s initiative “Keeping
Our Youth – Our Future – Here,” which was the goal of the competition.
Their plan will be presented to Governor Snyder.
The entries were reviewed and judged by a panel from West
Michigan:
