Race, gender topics at event about presidential election

The Women’s Center is hosting an event that will focus on race, gender and the upcoming presidential election.

Jane Junn, professor of political science from the University of Southern California, will give a presentation, “Race & Gender: Election 2012,” on Monday, October 22, from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Grand River Room of the Kirkhof Center.

Junn is the author of three books on political participation in the U.S., including Education and Democratic Citizenship in America, which won the Woodrow Wilson Foundation Award from the American Political Science Association for the best book published in political science.

Junn received degrees from the University of Michigan and the University of Chicago, and has taught at Rutgers University and the Eagleton Institute of Politics. Her father, Robert Junn, is professor emeritus of political science at Grand Valley and is the former chair of the Political Science Department.

Junn’s visit is part of the Women’s Center’s “Speaker Series: Educators & Activists for Gender Justice.” Denice Ann Evans, CEO of J’Hue Film Productions, will give a presentation, “Spitting Game: the College Hook-up Culture,” on Wednesdsay, October 10, at 6 p.m. in room 2204 of the Kirkhof Center.

The event is approved for LIB 100 and US 201 classes. The event is sponsored by Women and Gender Studies, Political Science Department, Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Honors College.
