Nathan Crick to give Carey Memorial Lecture

Special guest Nathan Crick, associate professor of rhetoric at Louisiana State University, will explore the complex intersections between art, science, rhetoric and democracy during his presentation, “The Birth of the Spectacle: Persuasion, Power and Production in Early Greek Tragedy,” Wednesday, October 17, from 6:30 – 8 p.m., in room 132 Lake Huron Hall, GVSU Allendale Campus.

Crick is the author of Rhetorical Public Speaking (Allyn & Bacon, 2010) and Democracy & Rhetoric: John Dewey on the Arts of Becoming (University of South Carolina Press, 2010). His focus is on the theory and practices of the Greek Sophists and the American Pragmatists.

“Rhetoric is an act of creation deployed to reveal better versions of ourselves in the midst of uncertainty, crisis and possibility,” said Crick.

The event is the 2012 James W. Carey Memorial Lecture presented by The School of Communications, The Communication Studies major and the Institute of General Semantics. Carey, who died in 2006 at age 71, was an important cultural historian and theorist of communications, and an influential teacher of journalists.
