The Laker Dance Team earned the highest score out of more than 25 colleges that competed at a National Dance Alliance Collegiate Summer Camp in August, beating teams from Purdue University and other Division I schools.

The team’s performance at the annual summer camp determined their eligibility to compete in the national competition, which will take place in Daytona this spring. At the camp, teams learned a routine in two days and were judged by NDA staff members who gave points based on technique, uniformity and performance. The Laker Dance Team earned points that totaled gold status.

Alyssa Kolb, team captain and Grand Valley senior, said the team has been one of the top performing schools at the camp since her first year at Grand Valley in 2008, but this is the first time the team won overall. “It was unreal,” she said. “We beat teams that we have always looked up to.”

The Laker Dance Team includes 18 students who perform at football and basketball games, and compete annually at national competitions.
