Grand Valley State University is hosting 2,000 K-12 students from across the state at its Pew Grand Rapids Campus during ArtPrize to teach them about art and expose them to the cultural aspects of the annual event.

All of the students attend one of 51 Grand Valley-authorized charter schools. The students will attend in several groups, with sixth through 12th-graders attending on September 20 and 21, and K-5 students on October 4 and 5.

Teachers from across the state applied with the Grand Valley Charter Schools Office to bring their classes to Grand Rapids for the event. The students will get a T-shirt and lunch will be provided at Ah-Nab-Awen park. Grand Valley’s Charter Schools Office is also reimbursing busing costs for students to attend the event.

The groups will get an art lesson from Grand Valley faculty members and art experts, including ice sculpting experts Randy Finch and Derek Maxfield who own “Ice Guru” in Grand Rapids and have been featured in their own show on the Food Network.

This is the second year Grand Valley charter school students have been brought in to experience the event.
