Children's Enrichment Center celebrates 40 years

The Children’s Enrichment Center at Grand Valley is celebrating its 40th anniversary by hosting a series of programs throughout the fall semester.

Sharalle Arnold, director of the Children’s Enrichment Center, said since its inception in 1972, the center has evolved from a large, one-room facility to a more traditional preschool that is committed to community. Formally called the Children’s Center, the center provides early care and education for children of student parents, faculty and staff members, and community members.

“It is our belief that if we foster an early learning environment that enables our families to feel empowered, accepted and secure, we will develop a community of engaged learners excited about success,” said Arnold. “I am proud to see our reach go beyond the center.”

The celebration will kick off with a CEC birthday party on Thursday, August 30, at 5 p.m. at the center, located next to Laker Village on the Allendale Campus. Fun activities and games are planned.

Student Parent Success Brown Bag luncheon, Wednesday, September 12, noon, Kirkhof Center, room 1142
The event will discuss issues related to current and future student parents at Grand Valley.

Legislative Luncheon, Wednesday, October 24, noon, Kirkhof Center, room 2266
The event will be an opportunity for policy makers to visit and discuss relevant issues important to young children and families. The event is co-sponsored by Ottawa County’s Great Start Collaborative.
 
Weight of the Nation, Thursday, November 1, 4 p.m., Children’s Enrichment Center
How communities can raise awareness about childhood obesity will be the main topic of conversation. The event is co-sponsored by Campus Recreation and is approved for LIB 100 classes.

Holiday Party, Thursday, December 6, 5 p.m., Children’s Enrichment Center

Jessica Miranda-Bevier, assistant director of the Children’s Enrichment Center, began at the center as a graduate student 10 years ago and said the program has evolved tremendously. “I have not only witnessed changes in the physical structure of the center, but the philosophy and mission have become more focused,” she said.
