Campus community can attend World Affairs Council lectures for free

Grand Valley students, faculty and staff members can attend at no cost each of the upcoming “Great Decisions” lectures, sponsored by the World Affairs Council of Western Michigan.

The series begins February 6 and continues each Monday, 6-7:15 p.m., through March 26 at the Aquinas College Performing Arts Center. Grand Valley is among the university sponsors of the series. Grand Valley audience members should sign the GVSU list at the registration table prior to each lecture. The series is detailed below.

• February 6: “What the Oceans are Telling Us and Why it Matters,” by “Dr. Ocean,” David E. Guggenheim, Ocean Foundation, Washington, D.C.;
• February 13: “The Cyber Frontier: Cyberspace Confronts Cybercrime,” by Sheila R. Ronis, Project on National Security Reform, Washington D.C.;
• February 20: “End Game: Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq,” by George A. Lopez, Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, University of Notre Dame;
• February 27: “Tools We Use to Promote Democracy Across the Globe,” by Lorne W. Craner, president, International Republican Institute, Washington, D.C.;
• March 5: “Mexico,” by Daniel Miller, professor of history, Calvin College;
• March 12: “Middle East Realignment,” by Graeme Bannerman, Middle East Institute, Washington, D.C.; moderator, Jim Goode, professor of history, GVSU;
• March 19: “Debriefing: Indonesia — What’s happening now on the ground?” by William Liddle, Political Science Department, Ohio State University;
• March 26: “Drilling Down From Foreign Policy to Domestic: Energy Policy,” moderator, Jack Lessenberry, Michigan Public Radio; panelists: Deborah Steketee, Center for Sustainability, Aquinas College; Bruce Goodman, environmental law, Varnum
