Bells to toll in tribute

The Grand Valley State University carillon bells will ring in conjunction with the “day of mourning” on Friday, December 21, proclaimed by Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy to remember the lives lost in the Newtown school shooting tragedy that occurred December 14.

Malloy asked for houses of worship and government buildings in his state and beyond to participate, beginning with a moment of silence at 9:30 a.m., followed by ringing bells 26 times in honor of each life that was taken at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

“Bells will toll on both the Cook Carillon on the Allendale Campus and the Beckering Family Carillon on the Pew Grand Rapids Campus,” said Julianne Vanden Wyngaard, university carillonneur. She learned of the tribute as a member of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America, which supports participation of the tribute.
