Pioneer Construction is the construction manager for the Mary Idema
Pew Library Learning and Information Commons project. Pioneer signed a
safety agreement with the Michigan Department of Licensing and
Regulation Affairs (LARA) and the Michigan Occupational Safety and
Health Administration (MIOSHA). Grand Valley is a supporting partner.
The goal is enhanced safety and zero injuries for workers.
A signing ceremony took place June 10 in the Kirkhof Center. The
partnership will mean a greater presence of safety inspectors at the
library construction site. The agreement also calls for each worker on
the site to complete a safety course and receive a certification of
completion. There will be as many as 300 tradesmen on site each day
putting in a total of about 300,000 man hours before the project is complete.
“Having a safety qualified work force is an asset for this and
future construction projects,” said James Moyer, assistant vice
president for Facilities Planning.
The Pew Library will be built to the U.S. Green Building
Council’s LEED Platinum specifications, the highest possible standard
in that sustainable rating system. The project is scheduled to be
completed in the fall of 2013.
