Families of students and faculty and staff members are invited to
Family Weekend
, which runs September 30-October 2. The weekend, sponsored by
Student Life, will include a variety of new activities this year.
Most events are free, some require a paid ticket for admission.
Highlights are below.
Friday, September 30:
• Dueling Pianos Lounge, Kirkhof Center, 8-11 p.m.: Test the
knowledge and skill of the pianists while singing along with them. The
event is free and features root beer floats and other refreshments.
Saturday, October 1:
• Pancakes with Presidents, Kirkhof Center, 9:30-11 a.m.:
President Thomas J. Haas and other student organization presidents
will cook a pancake breakfast for families; cost is $5.
• Ravine Tours, 10 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m.: Learn about efforts
to preserve the ravines adjacent to Grand Valley and explore the
hiking trails along the banks of the ravines; the event is free.
• Kirkhof Carnival, Kirkhof Center, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: Games,
prizes and crafts will be provided by student clubs and organizations
at Grand Valley; the event is free.
• ArtPrize Tour, DeVos Center, 11 a.m.-1 p.m..: Join Henry
Matthews, director of galleries and collections, for a preview tour of
ArtPrize entries. Lunch will follow; cost is $10 and tickets are required.
• Intro to Geocaching, Kirkhof Center, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.: Explore
and learn about campus through geocaching, a treasure hunting game
that uses a GPS.
• Taste of Grand Valley, Fieldhouse Arena, 4-6 p.m.: Taste
samples from dining areas at Grand Valley; tickets are required.
Sunday, October 2:
• Brunch and ECOuture Fashion Show, Kirkhof Center, 9:30
a.m.-noon, fashion show begins at 11:30 a.m.: Learn about fashion and
sustainability at Grand Valley; tickets are required.
Participants are invited to share where they are from and
interact with others on Twitter by using the hash tag #GVFamily11. A
live Twitter feed will be displayed in the Kirkhof Center throughout
the weekend.
