The Elizabeth Murray Garden was dedicated in a ceremony outside of
the Murray Living Center on September 6. Elizabeth, wife of former
Grand Valley President Mark A. Murray, served as first lady during
their five years at the university from 2001-2006.
During the ceremony, President Haas said the success of Grand
Valley’s presidents was enhanced by the first ladies. “Elizabeth was
an outstanding partner with Mark,” said Haas. “Her outreach to
students and this community has made a difference in the life and
vitality of the learning environment at Grand Valley.”
Marcia Haas said the garden will serve as a reminder of
Elizabeth’s spirit and dedication to Grand Valley. “It is fitting that
this lovely place is named after Elizabeth. For generations to come,
this will serve as a place for students to reflect and study,” she said.
Elizabeth Murray noted that gardens are often seen as an
inspiration for the future. “I hope this will be a special place for
students, for everybody. A learning environment for pleasure and
beauty. I have a favorite flower that is special to me — the
delphinium. I’m happy to know there are some in this garden,” she said.
