WGVU is celebrating its 38th birthday as Grand Valley celebrates
its 50th anniversary. On December 17, 1972, WGVU, then WGVC-TV
Channel 35, officially signed on the air at 6:30 p.m. The station was
made possible through the financial support of the West Michigan
community and a matching grant from the Department of Health,
Education and Welfare.
The inaugural program included President Emeritus Arend D.
Lubbers introducing the station to viewers. What started as four hours
of daily broadcasting on one station in 1972, has now grown to include:
WGVU-TV, with all its digital channels;
WGVK-TV, with all
its digital channels;
WGVU-FM, now available with multible HD
channels;
WGVU-AM, with the most “Time Spent Listening” of an AM
station in West Michigan and the first oldies station in the
country;
WGVS-FM, serving the lakeshore;
WGVU-AM, serving
the lakeshore;
A utilized satellite uplink system, used regularly
by members of the US House of Representatives
