MAREC offers solar tours

Staff members at the Michigan Alternative and Renewable Energy Center in Muskegon will host free solar tours of the city on Saturday, September 25.

MAREC Director Arnold (Arn) Boezaart said the goal behind the first-time event is to build awareness of solar energy and renewable energy. Tour organizer Kim Walton added that Muskegon receives 81 percent of the solar energy that Miami, Florida, does.

The 45-minute tours will run at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m., starting at MAREC, 200 Viridian St. Boezaart said about 50 people are expected.

The tour is part of the American Solar Energy Society's National Solar Tour, held annually for the past 15 years. For the first time tours are taking place in all 50 states, including several in Michigan. For more tour information contact Walton at 331-6907.

MAREC opened in 2003 with a mission to serve as a catalyst for economic development, a business accelerator and center for research, development and commercialization of alternative and renewable energy technologies.
