Grand Valley mourns death of former athletic director

Professor Emeritus of Physical Education and Recreation George MacDonald died March 30. He was 87. MacDonald came to Grand Valley in 1974 and retired in 1989. While at Grand Valley, he served as athletic director from 1976-1989 and was involved with the construction and renovation of many of the athletic facilities, including Lubbers Stadium and the Fieldhouse.

He was honored by the GLIAC in 1988, receiving the first annual Tom Donahue Award, in recognition of his contribution to the advancement of athletics within the GLIAC.

In addition to his work as athletic director, MacDonald was a professor and chair of the Physical Education and Therapeutic Departments and also served as assistant dean in the College of Arts and Science.

MacDonald earned a bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University, a master’s from the University of Michigan and a doctorate from State University of New York.
