ALLENDALE, Mich. — Young adults with autism are learning independence
and getting work experience at Grand Valley State University through a
pilot program called LITE - Learning Independence Through Experience.
The 12-week program, in partnership with Goodwill Industries of Greater
Grand Rapids and Michigan Rehabilitation Services, started in October.
In aims to teach adults, ages 18-26, skills to improve independence and
self-sufficiency in a workplace environment.
Two individuals have already completed the program at Grand Valley and
one student has just started. “The students work in our living centers
with the custodial staff,” said Gloria Myaard, facilities services
supervisor at Grand Valley. “The students are hard working, eager to
please and enjoy the interaction. This has been enlightening and very
rewarding for our staff members as well.”
Myaard said there are not many programs aimed at adults with autism as
they graduate from high school or college and this program gives them
work experience and a reference for future jobs.
