U.S. Sen. Carl Levin visits Muskegon Lake

U.S. Sen. Carl Levin made a site visit to Muskegon Lake where researchers from the Annis Water Resources Institute will help in the Muskegon Lake Restoration Project. A $10 million grant for the project was announced in July.

AWRI research scientist Carl Ruetz’s lab will be doing the fish monitoring work and AWRI director Al Steinman’s lab will be doing the macrophyte and socio-economic monitoring work.

The Recovery Act grant will improve aquatic habitat for fish and other species by removing more than 180,000 tons of degraded lake bottom sediment and restoring 10,000 feet of Lake Muskegon shoreline now hardened by materials including foundry slag, broken concrete, and sheet metal.
