TRiO holds awards luncheon

Grand Valley's TRiO Education Talent Search held a recognition luncheon April 17 for students from the College of Education who serve as mentors to middle school students from Grand Rapids.

The TRiO tutor/mentor program started four years ago. Santiago Zapata, Education Talent Search advisor, said participating schools are Westwood, Riverside and Burton middle schools. Those students are paired with a COE mentor for the school year. Nearly 50 Grand Valley students are involved in the program.

Grand Valley freshman Rachel Bergland earned the "Outstanding Sixth Grade Student Aid" award for working with an entire class. Senior Ashleigh Thomas and junior Daniele Stanaback also earned awards.
