Grand Valley's TRiO Education Talent Search held a recognition luncheon
April 17 for students from the College of Education who serve as mentors
to middle school students from Grand Rapids.
The TRiO tutor/mentor program started four years ago. Santiago Zapata,
Education Talent Search advisor, said participating schools are
Westwood, Riverside and Burton middle schools. Those students are paired
with a COE mentor for the school year. Nearly 50 Grand Valley students
are involved in the program.
Grand Valley freshman Rachel Bergland earned the "Outstanding Sixth
Grade Student Aid" award for working with an entire class. Senior
Ashleigh Thomas and junior Daniele Stanaback also earned awards.
