A Grand Valley State University student is in serious condition after
being shot by an Ottawa County Sheriff's deputy Wednesday night.
The shooting occurred while officers were trying to execute a search
warrant in a narcotics investigation at his off-campus apartment.
Officers were entering the apartment at Campus View Apartments near the
Allendale Campus at about 9 p.m., March 11 when the officer fired one
shot that hit the student in the chest.
Police said at a news conference this morning that the deputy was
assigned to a local police drug team. Police reported that the student
was not armed.
The news conference was held by Lt. Cameron Henke, a section commander
for the West Michigan Enforcement Team and Ottawa County Undersheriff
Greg Steigenga.
Henke did not reveal the name of the officer or the student. The
officer, who has 12 years of law enforcement experience and a good
record, is on paid leave while police investigate.
There were five officers from the narcotics investigation team at the
scene according to Henke and Steigenga.
