U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow received an update about several renewable
energy inventions created by Grand Valley State University’s Michigan
Alternative and Renewable Energy Center in Muskegon.
Stabenow toured the facility with Grand Valley President Thomas J. Haas
and MAREC executive director Imad Mahawili on Friday.
One of the products being readied for commercial deployment is a
residential-sized wind turbine now being marketed by EarthTronics of
Muskegon. The turbine, invented by Mahawili, measures 36 inches in
diameter and can generate up to 20 percent of the average home’s
electricity. It has an expected retail cost of around $2,000 and will be
sold at home improvement stores.
EarthTronics says it is weighing offers from states other than Michigan
for manufacturing support; Stabenow said she will continue discussions
with EarthTronics staff in the hopes that the device can be manufactured
in Michigan.
