Grand Valley student released from hospital

An Update from President Haas:

I want to report that the Department of State Police responded quickly and positively to my letter regarding the investigation into Derek Copp's shooting. The Department assured me that it is conducting its investigation in a timely and thorough manner, and that I will be advised when it has been completed.

Our Dean of Students, Bart Merkle, has met with Derek and his family to personally convey our best wishes for Derek's full and speedy recovery. Dean Merkle reviewed with the Copps the kinds of accommodations that are available to students who experience injury or illness during the academic year. I understand that Derek has been released from the hospital.  I know that we all look forward to his return to campus as soon as he is able.

Finally, I want to say how impressed I have been with the thoughtful response from our Student Senate as we await the police report. There has been demonstrated support from Derek's friends and others in the community who are seeking answers regarding the shooting. These responses underscore the sense of community that is such an important part of Grand Valley State University.
