Graduate Education Week showcases student talent

Graduate students from Grand Valley State University will join graduate students throughout the state for Michigan Graduate Education Day in Lansing.

Four Grand Valley graduate students will be among 60 others showcasing their research for legislators on Thursday, April 23, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Capitol building.

The event is part of Michigan Graduate Education Week, April 20-24, and will highlight the importance of graduate education and the impact it has on employment opportunities in this economy.

Priscilla Kimboko, dean of Graduate Studies and Grants Administration at Grand Valley, said the event is a great way to draw attention to the talent and vision of graduate students and invest in the recruitment and development of top students.

Grand Valley will also host national speaker Robert M. Augustine, dean of the Graduate School, Research and International Programs at Eastern Illinois University, on Monday, April 20, at 11:30 a.m. in the Eberhard Center, 301 W. Fulton, Grand Rapids. Augustine will talk about the importance of graduate education in the current economy.

The four Grand Valley graduate students attending Michigan Graduate Education Day in Lansing are:

Katie Lindt, showcasing her research, “Essential Need Food Study: Gleaning, Transportation and Distribution.”

Katie Lewis, showcasing her research, “The Need for Student Veteran Services at Grand Valley State University: A Qualitative Analysis.”

Laurie Beth Nederveld, showcasing her research, “Sediment remediation impacts on macroinvertebrate community structure: assessing the success of urban stream restoration.”

T. Garrison Sanders, Jr., showcasing his research, “Exploring the links between groundwater input, community structure and energy flow in Lake Huron’s sinkholes.”

ROBERT M. AUGUSTINE BIO
Augustine has 30 years teaching experience and received his doctorate in communication sciences and disorders from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and is a certified and licensed speech-language pathologist. He is a former president and vice president of the Illinois Speech-Language-Hearing Association and has served in a variety of leadership roles for the association.
