The director of an award-winning documentary that follows a struggle for
labor rights by Latina immigrants working in the Los Angeles garment
industry will visit Grand Valley State University and the Hispanic
Center of Western Michigan in March.
Almudena Carracedo's visit and screening of "Made in LA" is
scheduled for March 26, 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center, room
2204, on GVSU's Allendale Campus; and 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Hispanic
Center, 1204 Grandville Ave. SW. Both events are free and open to the
public. Mexican food will be served at the Grand Valley event; RSVP by

Carracedo's visit coincides with Grand Valley's Cesar Chavez
Celebration. The event is sponsored by the GVSU Office of Multicultural
Affairs, Women's Center, School of Social Work, Latin American Studies,
Sociology, School of Communications, College of Interdisciplinary
Studies and Women and Gender Studies.
"Made in LA," which has won numerous film competition awards
and an Emmy after it aired on PBS, follows the story of three Latina
immigrants who fought for better working conditions in the garment
sweatshops in Los Angeles. The film also documents the struggles within
the women's families during a three-year boycott campaign and lawsuit
