K-12 students in Kent County will learn how to be better stewards of the Grand River while serving their community, thanks to a grant from the Great Lakes Fishery Trust.
Grand Valley State University’s College of Education, in collaboration with many community partners, was awarded the $200,000 grant to provide education opportunities to lower Grand River watershed issues. Students will experience hands-on learning as well as participate in community service.
“The grant is helping establish collaborative partnerships with the schools and the community,” said Claudia Sowa Wojciakowski, director of community outreach for the College of Education. “We have 33 partners and the list is growing.”
Partners integral to the planning and implementation of the project include Grand Valley’s Annis Water Resources Institute and Regional Math and Science Center, City of Grand Rapids, John Ball Zoo, Kent Intermediate School District, Howard Christian Nature Center and Celebration Cinema, to name a few.
