Youths participate in racial unity conference

Students from 10 area high schools came together in Allendale onĀ  March 4 for the first High School Calling All Colors racial unity conference. Calling All Colors is a project of the Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity and is co-sponsored by Hope College and Grand Valley State University.

The Calling All Colors project has worked to create a better understanding of the issues related to racial diversity for middle school students the past 11 years. This is the first time a second conference is being hosted for local high schools at Grand Valley.

Nearly 150 students from Ottawa and Muskegon county high schools participated in diversity dialogues, activities, and presentations. The morning session featured presentations by students from each school, sharing the success of action plans they designed at an earlier conference at Hope College. The plans consist of strategies the students designed for implementation over the school year to increase appreciation for racial diversity in their school.

Vice President for Inclusion and Equality Jeanne J. Arnold also spoke at the conference.

Participating schools included:
  • Grand Haven High School
  • Holland High School
  • Holland Christian High School
  • Juvenile Justice Institute
  • Muskegon High School
  • M-TEC (Muskegon)
  • Spring Lake High School
  • West Ottawa High School
  • Zeeland East High School
  • Zeeland West High School
  • Wavecrest Career Academy
