Women's History Month events continue

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Continuing events during Women’s History Month, one of the writers of HBO's hit series "The Wire" will speak at Grand Valley State University about the impact of women in theater, film and television.

Kia Corthron, actress and playwright, will discuss “Women in the World of Theatre” on Tuesday, March 18, at 6 p.m. in room 204 of the Kirkhof Center on the Allendale Campus. Her lecture is free and open to the public.

Corthron has received the AT&T On Stage and the New Professional Theatre Playwriting awards, among others. Her plays have been published by the Dramatists Play Service as well as numerous anthologies.

Also next week, Buddy Howard will share his perspective on his daughter’s recovery from an eating disorder on Tuesday, March 18, at 7 p.m. in Loosemore Auditorium at the DeVos Center on the Pew Grand Rapids Campus. Following his lecture will be an appearance by former “American Idol” contestant Nicole Tieri Cornell. At the event, Created, a new nonprofit group, will host the “Great Jeans Giveaway.” Jeans brought to the lecture can be donated or sold during an auction; proceeds will benefit the National Eating Disorders Association.

Many campus departments have co-sponsored Women’s History Month events including the Women’s Center, Women’s Commission, Women and Gender Studies, Office of Multicultural Affairs, Positive Black Women, School of Communications, Latin American Studies and Writing Department.
