WASHINGTON, D.C. -- As the lights from the political conventions fade,
the heat is turning up on critical national issues like the economy. No
state in the union is dealing more with shifting and trying financial
times than Michigan, a state that is also a swing state in November’s
presidential election.
The Michigan congressional delegation and senior Michigan delegation
staff members have been invited to hear one of the country’s most
experienced economic experts, L. William Seidman, talk about the
national economy. Observations on the economy in Michigan will be
offered by Dr. H. James Williams, dean of the Seidman College of
Business at Grand Valley State University, and he has some positive
indices to share. Recent surveys conducted by the university show
positive signs in the state’s economy, and major companies are
indicating plans for expansion in Michigan.
Seidman, a Michigan native, is chief financial commentator for CNBC
Business Television, and his "Seidman Says" commentaries are
widely watched and reported. Seidman was an economic advisor to
presidents Ford and Reagan, and served as chairman of the Federal
Deposit Insurance Corporation under presidents Reagan and George H.W.
Bush. He was founding chairman of the Board of Trustees of Grand
Valley State University. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and The
University of Michigan law school.
Dr. Williams is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Management
Accountant, and an attorney with a wealth of practical experiences in
the public accounting profession and in the legal profession. His
research work is widely published in scholarly and practitioner
journals. He earned his bachelor’s degree at North Carolina Central
University, a master’s degree at University of Wisconsin (Madison), a
Ph.D. in accounting at the University of Georgia (Athens) and J.D. and
LL.M. (Taxation) degrees at Georgetown University Law Center.
