Grand Valley students apparent victims of carbon monoxide poisoning

Two Grand Valley students were found dead in a vehicle around 9 p.m., Nov. 19, in Muskegon County.

Police say 26-year-old Douglas Ward and 20-year-old Amber Brown likely died of carbon monoxide poisoning caused by breathing fumes from a charcoal grill found inside their vehicle. It is believed they may have fallen asleep while the grill was in operation.

Ward was a resident of Aiken, South Carolina, and lived in Ravine Apartments; Brown was from Montague and lived in Laker Village.

The Dean of Students Office and the Department of Public Safety have been in contact with the families and roommates of the students and have extended condolences on behalf of the Grand Valley community.

Those needing follow-up assistance related to this tragic situation are encouraged to contact the Grand Valley Counseling Center at 331-3266 for an appointment with a counselor. Additional information about counseling services is available online at www.gvsu.edu/counsel
