Grand Valley State University will screen 20 films in less than three
hours during the second annual Mindgating-A Cinematic Tailgating Party 2008.
The event, during the university’s Homecoming Weekend, is free and open
to the public. Films will be shown on Saturday, October 11, from 1-4
p.m. in two locations at Kirkhof Center, on the Allendale Campus: room
94 in the lower level Communications Studio; and room 2263 on level two.
Organized by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the School of
Communications, the featured films are all by Grand Valley alumni or
faculty. Films include animations, documentaries, dramatic films and
video art that range in length from Derk Baartman’s 30-second “Celebrity
Sighting,” to Michael Deering’s 88-minute “Postmark Paradise.”
Among alumni attending the event is 2002 Grand Valley graduate Angie
Mistretta. She was Grand Valley’s first student to receive the
competitive Jacob K. Javits Fellowship, in 2005, which supported her
graduate study at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. Her
4-minute thesis film, “Skin,” will be shown at Grand Valley. It claimed
a spot in the academy’s Spring Show, and the supporting materials helped
her land a paid internship at PIXAR Animation Studios.
“Treasure,” a film by another Javits winner, Melissa Bouwman, will also
be shown. Bouwman, graduated cum laude from Grand Valley in 1994 and has
worked in media education and with underprivileged youth through the
West Michigan Center for Arts and Technology.
Recent grad Kari Smith will show her “Bono’s Barbeque Contest” film,
which won second place. She also won the HVH International World Peace
Scholarship in 2007 for her film “The Message.” Mike Allore, a 1997
graduate, will show and discuss his film “The Next Step.” The short
quirky film, about a couple on a date in a coffee shop, recently was a
winner at the Forster Film Festival in Australia, where he will embark
on a short tour with the film.
