Former chief of CIA's bin Laden unit to speak in Grand Rapids

Michael Scheuer, the former chief of the CIA's unit tasked with capturing Osama bin Laden, will talk about the War on Terror when he visits Grand Rapids.

Scheuer served as the chief of the bin Laden unit at the Counterterrorist Center from 1996 to 1999. He is the once anonymous author of Imperial Hubris: Why the West is Losing the War on Terror, and the newly released, Marching Toward Hell: America and Islam After Iraq.

Grand Valley State University’s Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies, joined by the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, is sponsoring Scheuer’s talk in Grand Rapids titled “America on the Road to Defeat: A Presidential Campaign Without a Foreign Policy Debate.”

Scheuer will argue for what is best for America in the War on Terror, Wednesday, June 25, at 7:30 p.m., at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in downtown Grand Rapids. The event is free and open to the public.

“Michael Scheuer is one of the most provocative, informed analysts of the Iraq War and fight against terrorism,” said Gleaves Whitney, director of the Hauenstein Center. “Whether you are Republican, Democratic, or Independent, you will be challenged by his tough-minded stance. Going into the fall election, every American citizen should become familiar with Scheuer’s arguments.”

Scheuer also wrote Through Our Enemies’ Eyes: Osama Bin Laden, Radical Islam & the Future of America and is a Senior Fellow with The Jamestown Foundation.
