Several university departments are sponsoring a documentary screening and panel discussion centered on the continuing struggle of Native Americans and to commemorate November as Native American Heritage Month.
“The Canary Effect: Kill the Indian, Save the Man,” a film by Robin Davey and Yellow Thunder Woman, will be shown at 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 20, in the Cook-DeVos Center for Health Sciences, Hager Auditorium.
The documentary has received critical acclaim and in 2006 won the Stanley Kubrick Award for Innovative Film Making at the Traverse City Film Festival, among other film festival awards.
A discussion will follow led by a panel including a tribal judge, students and scholars. The event is sponsored by Grand Valley’s Native Student Association, Office of Inclusion and Equity, College of Interdisciplinary Studies and School of Social Work.
